PSYCHOTHERAPY DURING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

Given the impact of the Covid-19 Coronavirus outbreak there will be some very specific psychological, emotional and relationship problems that individuals will face. Working with and addressing issues resulting from this pandemic can be very helpful to reduce symptoms and provide a support structure to make life much more bearable.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTIONS TO THIS NEW SITUATION

Many people will be struggling with feelings such as:

• Anxiety
• Loss of normal life patterns; loss of contact with friends and family
• Relationship difficulties
• Depression
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
• Anger issues
• Stress
• Bereavement

HOW CAN PSYCHOTHERAPY HELP?

Any of the above reactions to the epidemic are normal; psychotherapy can be enormously helpful in managing difficult emotions and making sense of it all by:

• Helping you to manage difficult thoughts
• Teaching you to better regulate feelings, so that you do not feel overwhelmed
• Providing you with support in dealing with isolation and quarantine
• Working with you to manage relationship stresses
• Providing you and your partner with couples therapy where you are both feeling stressed
• Helping you to manage and treat anxiety and depression
• Working through loss or bereavement
• Calming the intensity of intrusive thoughts and OCD symptoms
• Providing you with an ongoing support structure in which you can work through all your thoughts and feelings in a relational context.

HOW CAN I ACCESS THERAPY WHILST I’M ISOLATED?

In ordinary times we prefer to meet our patients face to face, at least initially; but these are not ordinary times. Our therapists are very comfortable working online with video-conferencing techniques such as Skype, Zoom, FaceTime etc, as well as therapy over the telephone.
